Elementary Practice Materials by Sonya Land

As a mathleague.org sponsor and site coordinator for the past 20 years, Sonya Land has organized and encouraged participation in elementary, middle, and high school contests in Missouri. After her own children became old enough to attend elementary contests, she found an absence of ready-made materials for use at the elementary contest level that emphasize problem-solving instead of computation. The following materials were created to be used by parent or teacher sponsors who wish to prepare their elementary students for the mathleague.org elementary contest.

This packet contains a sample timeline of topics, lesson plans, and activity sheets with solutions for use in a typical school year before the mathleague.org in-school contest in January or early February. Each activity takes approximately 45-60 minutes and can be used in a before-school or after-school setting with fourth and fifth graders. The activities cover topics that are frequently found on mathleague.org contests as well as incorporate actual past mathleague.org events.

Number Sense Materials by Leo Ramirez

The following materials were written by Leo Ramirez, a legendary Texas math coach who provided inspiration for the creation of mathleague.org. All these materials are scanned PDFs of the hard copy works that can be ordered from http://www.rammaterials.com.

The mathleague.org Number Sense tests are derived from the type of tests Mr. Ramirez writes, although our tests have been somewhat modified from this style. Please note that some of these tests indicate a target grade level, but such a distinction is irrelevant to our contests since all students take the same test. In order to help you assess whether these tests will be helpful to you, we offer this free sample test for you to download and evaluate.
