Testing Modes
For our elementary, middle, and high school qualifying contests, we offer three different ways to take our tests, all of which show up on the contest calendar each month for each age group. All three offer the same opportunities to qualify for a Championship round, and we offer these options in order to accommodate as many students as possible. You are welcome to decide what test mode works best for you for each qualifying round. Please note that District, State, National, and International Championships will have restrictions on which test modes are available, and you will be required to test using the testing mode(s) indicated for each Championship. The Number Sense Challenge is only offered as an online test, and the Relay Challenge is only offered as an on-demand test.
- In-person testing - Our most iconic and long-standing contest experience, in-person contests bring together students from various schools to take a pencil and paper test that is usually graded in real time followed by an awards ceremony where students may win trophies or other prizes.
- Online testing - Developed in March 2020 in order to allow students to continue participating in contests from home, this test mode features a live proctored Zoom meeting where students take tests on their own computers and compete for prizes.
- On-demand testing - Our newest and most flexible test mode allows students to take tests on their own computers anytime during a 7-day window. No prizes are awarded for on-demand tests, but substantial pricing discounts are available for large groups of students from the same school who sign up at the same time.
Age Restrictions
Please note that although anyone (even adults!) who is not a mathleague.org employee may participate in the Number Sense Challenge or the Relay Challenge, the rest of our contests have age limits on who may participate and are restricted to students in grade 12 and below. Click here to find out what grade level you are in for purposes of our contests.
- Students in grades 9-12 may participate in our high school contests.
- Students in grades 7-8 may participate in our middle and high school contests.
- Students in grades 3-6 may participate in our elementary, middle, and high school contests.
- Students in grades 2 and below may participate every contest we organize, including the early childhood contest.
Geographic Restrictions
In-person contests - Each in-person contest listed on our website indicates the city as well as the state or country where the contest will be held. If the contest is a qualifying round that allows online registration, students may attend the contest no matter where they attend school even if the contest is in a different state or country. If the contest is a Championship round, students must attend only the site they are assigned to. If you cannot find an in-person contest in your area, please contact us at customercare@mathleague.org to discuss holding a contest at your school.
Online and on-demand contests - Each elementary, middle, or high school contest has a two- or three-letter code in parentheses to indicate its geographical scope. For contests with an XX designation, students may sign up for those contests regardless of where they attend school. For contests that designate a specific state or country, students may sign up for those contests only if their school is located in that state or country.
