Am I eligible to compete?
If you attend any school anywhere in the world and are enrolled in grade 12 or below, you may participate in one or more of our age-level contests as long as you read, understand, and follow the rules for our contests. This includes telling us what school you attend, so make sure your school is eligible to compete as well.
What if my school/government won't let me compete?
Please understand that in most countries neither your school nor your government may prohibit you from participating in our contests, but we do expect you to follow the local laws if such prohibitions are in place. If you are in the US, your school has absolutely no right to prevent you from participating in our contests or from telling us what school you attend unless you have signed a contract voluntarily waiving your First Amendment rights. If your school does not want to be involved, we allow parents or outside coaches to serve as our point of contact on behalf of students from the school who wish to participate.
Which contests am I eligible for?
Students in grades 12 and below may participate in our high school contests. Students in grades 8 and below may participate in our middle school contests. Students in grades 6 and below may participate in our elementary school contests. Students in grades 2 and below may participate in our early childhood contests. Students may only participate in a District, State, National, or International Championship if they meet the qualifying criteria established for that Championship.
What grade level am I in?
Our school year runs from August 1 to July 31 and students will be assigned the same grade level for the entire school year. When registering for a qualifying contest, each student must determine what grade level they will be in on the last day they attend school prior to April 1 and report that grade level when registering for the contest. When registering for a Championship Round (District, State, National, or International), each student must use the same grade level they used for the qualifying contest(s).
How often may I compete?
Students may participate in only one contest per release number. What this means is that you may not take two tests at the same age level in a given month because those tests will share the same release number. Typically we put out a new test with a new release number at the beginning of each month starting in October and continuing through the end of the competition year. The contest calendar for each age level will indicate which release number will be given out at each event.
Can you give an example?
So for instance if you are in 7th grade you may take a middle school test and a high school test listed under the October heading, but you may not take two middle school tests because they will have the same release number, and you may not take an elementary test because you are too old. Then you may take a middle school and high school test again in November because those release numbers will be different. Students are encouraged to take qualifying tests each month if they are interested and able to do so.
Are there any contests for adults?
Anyone who is not a mathleague.org employee may participate in the Number Sense Challenge or the Relay Challenge. We encourage parents and teachers to join in these contests because it's more fun for the students and it gives the coaches more insight into the student experience.
