2020 mathleague.org High School World Championship
June 14, Online

mathleague.org is pleased to announce that it will be hosting the first annual World Championship for high school students on June 14, 2020 in our online testing environment.

Please see below for information about all aspects of the contest. If you need to contact us with questions that are not addressed on this page, you may email us at customercare@mathleague.org. As always, we plan to display a picture slideshow prior to the start of the awards. If you have pictures from contests this year that you would be willing to share, please email them to us at pictures@mathleague.org.

Participation

In each nation outside the US where mathleague.org held a National Championship in 2020, certain high-scoring students are qualified to participate in the World Championship; details for how to qualify can be found here. For students in nations that held a National Championship (Bulgaria and Uzbekistan), registration for this contest is only open to students who qualify or who are selected off the waiting list to replace qualified students who are unable to attend. To ensure a seat at the contest, qualified students must register by June 10; after June 10, if space is available, students will be invited from the waiting list to replace qualified students who have not yet registered. To join the waiting list, please send an email to customercare@mathleague.org indicating which students from your nation would like to attend the contest if space is available. The contest fee will be $15 per student if paid online by June 10 or $20 per student after June 10, and students must pre-register for the contest by clicking the link below. Your confirmation email will indicate how to make payment for the contest.

To see a list of students from your nation who have qualified for the World Championship, go to our results page, select your National Championship from the drop-down menu, and click the "qualifiers to next level" link. Contact us at customercare@mathleague.org if your nation had two or more students in the same grade with the same initials and you need help determining which student(s) qualified for the World Championship. Also be sure to let us know if you find any mistakes in the list so we can make sure everyone who qualified for the World Championship shows up on the list of qualifiers.

For students outside Bulgaria and Uzbekistan, please contact your national coordinator to determine your eligibility to compete in the World Championship. If you sign up without your registration being cleared by your national coordinator, your registration will be deleted with no refund. If you do not know who your national coordinator is, contact us at customercare@mathleague.org and we can put you in touch with your national coordinator. Please check with your national coordinator before paying the registration fee for this contest to determine whether you should pay us directly or pay your national coordinator. Students who attend school in Africa do not need to pay a registration fee for this event and may ignore any information received during the registration process that refers to payment.

Please note that only students who have prepaid online or are exempt from paying may attend this contest. Each participant must have a designated adult chaperone who will be physically present at the same location as the student to facilitate the student's participation in the contest, proctor the student during the tests, submit student answers immediately after each test is completed, and help grade tests if needed. If multiple students are present in the same location, they may share a chaperone as long as that chaperone can fulfill the duties required on behalf of all students in their care. Click below to register for this contest. Note: Registration deadline for qualified students is June 10. After June 10, additional participants will be accepted only if space is available.

REGISTRATION IS CLOSED. PLEASE EMAIL US IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO BE ADDED TO THE WAITING LIST.

Testing

Written testing will consist of Target, Sprint, Team, Relay, and Power rounds. The Power round will be distributed to participants two days before the World Championship along with instructions for completing and submitting the answers prior to contest check-in. Participants are expected to bring their own pencils and calculators. Participants will be sent a link to the Zoom meeting around 8:45am UTC on the day of the contest, and participants will be held in a waiting room until 9:00am. The first half hour before testing will be spent making sure students get checked into our system, verifying cameras and names, and helping with tech support issues. Testing is expected to start at 9:30am UTC.

While in the online meeting room, all participants MUST have a working camera and be visible on camera throughout the testing WITHOUT an artificial background. In addition, all students must be listed under their real name in the participants list. Violators will be removed from the testing environment with no refunds and no opportunity to make up the test. Please note that failure to pay attention to this rule is not an excuse for violating it, and failure to have been caught violating this rule at a previous contest is not an excuse for violating it at this contest.

If your students cannot test at the designated time for religious or health reasons that can be verified by documentation from clergy or a physician, please contact us for more information about how we can accommodate the affected students.

Awards

Prizes will be given to the top students in each grade level, as well as to the top teams, and will be announced at an awards ceremony starting shortly after the conclusion of the written testing. In addition to announcing the winners, we will also be holding a Countdown Round and perhaps some other surprises. Plan on the awards ceremony taking at least an hour.

For those students who win prizes, we will be in touch with their national coordinators to arrange delivery of the prizes.

Preparation

Practice tests are available for purchase at the mathleague.org store if you would like to prepare for the contest (one set of tests is available for free download on our site as well). For schools that did not get a copy of the National Championship questions and would like to review those to practice for the World Championship, please let us know once you have registered for the contest and we will email a copy of the questions to you.

Congratulations to everyone who qualified for this event; we look forward to seeing you on June 14!
