Relay Challenge
mathleague.org invites you to compete in our Relay Challenge, a weekly event that will allow you to track your progress on relay tests as you climb the leader board! You can register for the entire 30-week challenge for $60. EVERYONE is welcome to participate; we will have a separate open division for participants who are older than 12th grade - college students who miss taking relay tests, coaches, even parents are welcome to join!
Each week students will have a seven-day window to complete the five relays in the upcoming week's relay round using our online contest platform. After the testing window is closed, results will be posted to our website and the next week's tests will be available to complete. Once each week's test is closed, we will post the test questions, answers, and solutions along with that week's video lesson to our shared Google Drive folder for you to review at your leisure.
Please note that while the relay test is a team event at our contests, the Relay Challenge is designed for individual students to participate and work on the questions alone.
Each student's top 10 weekly scores will count toward their overall score for the Challenge, and we will award a prize to our top K-12 student at the High School National Championship in May based on cumulative scores at the end of the Challenge. Sorry, there are no prizes for the open division other than
enlightenment! :)
Follow these steps to get involved:
- Make sure you understand the relay rules, and download some free tests if you haven't taken a relay test before. DO NOT sign up for the Relay Challenge if you have not seen a relay test before; these tests contain high school level content, and we want to make sure students aren't completely lost with the material. Students in elementary school are welcome to compete but may be more comfortable with our Number Sense Challenge.
- Familiarize yourself with how the testing works (see below).
- Sign up for the 10-week Challenge.
- Watch your progress and that of the other students on our Leader Board.
How the testing works
- Log into the online contest platform - You may take each week's tests anytime from midnight Sunday to midnight Sunday (Eastern Time). When you are ready to start the tests, go to https://mathleague.org/relaychallengeentry.php and input your name, confirmation number, and test number (2024-2025 test numbers range from 125R01 to 125R30). Select whichever test (Relay1 through Relay5) you plan to take first, then click submit. You must have an adult chaperone supervising you during the test to help ensure that you understand the rules and are following the rules. Email us at customercare@mathleague.org if you encounter any difficulty logging in.
- Start the test - Verify your information on the following screen: make sure your name, confirmation number, and event number show up along with the name of the test you are planning to take. When you are ready to start the test, enter your event number as the password and select Go To Test. Do not enter the password until you are ready to start the test, because once you access the test for the first time, your time starts and you will not be able to get back into the test once the time is over.
- Complete the test - On the following page you will see a timer and submit button at the top of the page, and the questions will appear below. There will be a text box to the right of each question where you will place your answer if you wish to answer that question; you must put ONLY numbers in this box in order to receive credit. If you wish to submit answers before the timer is finished, hit the submit button at the top of the page; otherwise, if you do not submit early the test will automatically submit your answers when the timer runs out. Do not hit the back button during the test or navigate away from the page or the timer may show an incorrect value; your test will continue to be timed using our internal clock and your answers will be submitted when time is up regardless of what the timer displays on your screen. We recommend writing your answers on paper as you go along in case you encounter any technical difficulties. If you do not reach the confirmation page at the conclusion of the test, or if you encounter any other technical difficulties, please have your chaperone email us immediately with a list of your answers and a thorough explanation of what happened. We will investigate and decide on a course of action based on the circumstances.
- Get ready for the next test - Once your answers are submitted you will reach a confirmation page that indicates what you submitted as an answer to each question. Your chaperone should receive an email immediately confirming your submission, but if that is not received you should save a copy of the submission page so you have a record of your answers. Once you reach this page, DO NOT hit the back button or attempt to restart the same test, because if you do it could erase the answers you already submitted and lock you out from submitting further answers. Hit the gray "here" button on the submission confirmation page to go back to the main login page where you can select the next test and repeat the process until you've taken all five relay tests. You are not required to take all the tests that are available, but any tests you wish to take must be completed by midnight Eastern Time on Sunday.
Past Challenges you can purchase for electronic access to the tests and recordings
Note that the 2022-2023 Challenge contains 40 tests and 40 video lessons but not all problems are covered in the video lessons. The price for each Challenge is $60.
