Elementary National Championship (US)

In order to qualify for our National Championship in the United States, a student must attend the State Championship and do any one of the following:
  • Place among the top 3 overall individuals in the student's grade level at the State Championship if there are fewer than 100 participants at the State Championship and the state does not have a District Championship.
  • Place among the top 6 overall individuals in the student's grade level at the State Championship if there are 100 or more participants but fewer than 200 participants at the State Championship and the state does not have a District Championship.
  • Place among the top 10 overall individuals in the student's grade level at the State Championship if there are 200 or more participants at the State Championship and the state does not have a District Championship. States that fall into this category will be partitioned into districts the following year and will hold District Championships from that point forward.
  • Place among the top 10 overall individuals in the student's grade level at the State Championship if the state has a District Championship.
  • Achieve a total individual score of 200 or more points out of 300 at the State Championship. Please note that students who score 200 or more also pre-qualify to attend the in-person International Championship; click here for more details.
  • Be a team member of the first place overall school in the school's division at the State Championship, based upon the "sweepstakes" score, and contribute to the school's sweepstakes score by either having one of the 4 highest individual point totals from the school or being a member of the school's top-scoring team on the team round. If two teams from the school have identical team test and borda scores, the tie will be broken by adding the individual scores of the team members.
  • Students who do not qualify under one of the above rules may qualify as a "wild card" by placing among the top 15 overall individuals in the student's grade level across all states or by being a sweepstakes contributor of one of the top 6 schools in the school's division across all states as described above above. These students are not eligible to collect a prize for their performance at the State Championship and will not show up in our results as a National Championship qualifier but will nevertheless be allowed to compete at the National Championship the same as all other qualifiers.
Additional Policies:
  • Any student who is invited to attend the National Championship will be eligible to compete in all events.
  • Only students who have qualified for the National Championship as an individual or part of a sweepstakes team, or who have been invited off a waiting list to replace a student who cannot attend, may compete at that meet.
  • Teams at the National Championship do not need to consist of the same individuals who competed together when qualifying for the National Championship; the school's coach may choose how to arrange the qualifying students from a given school into teams.

If you would like to submit a proposal to bring the National Championship to your city, we are happy to consider bids. Guidelines for submitting a proposal can be found here. Deadline is June 1 of each year for proposals to host the National Championship the following year.
