Elementary International Championship

A student may qualify for our International Championship by attending the National Championship in their country and placing among the top 10 individuals in the student's grade level at the National Championship. In addition, students in countries that use release 8 (the May test) for their State Championships and release 9 (the June test) for their National Championship may pre-qualify for the in-person International Championship by achieving a total individual score of 200 or more points out of 300 at the State Championship.

For eligible students who are ready to make the trip to the International Championship, pre-qualification is an opportunity to lock in a seat at the International Championship without having to worry about how they will score on the National Championship, and it will give them extra time to plan their trip. Eligible students wishing to take advantage of this opportunity must register and pay for the in-person International Championship by May 31; after June 1 this payment is non-refundable and cannot be transferred to another student or to the online test option. Students who do not complete registration and payment by May 31 may still go through the normal channels to qualify for the International Championship based on their score at the National Championship.

Additional Policies:

  • Any student who is invited to attend the International Championship will be eligible to compete in all events.
  • Only students who have qualified for the International Championship, or who have been invited off a waiting list to replace a student who cannot attend, may compete at the International Championship.
  • Teams at the International Championship will be organized by country, subject to our subunit policy as described below. Students at the International Championship may form a team with any students from their country, and sweepstakes awards will be given to countries rather than schools. There will be no distinction between Division 5 and Division 6 at the International Championship.
  • Please let us know by April 1 if you would like to submit a formal petition for a subunit of your country to be considered for participation as a separate "country" at the International Championship. We will evaluate your petition and let you know by May 1 whether your subunit will be allowed to compete as its own country. mathleague.org also reserves the right to designate national subunits as separate countries after consultation with the national coordinators in those countries. As an example, participants from Scotland, Palestine, or the Navajo Nation might request to compete as a country at the International Championship; mathleague.org's designation of a subunit as a "country" for purposes of competition does not reflect any official opinion on the geopolitical status of the subunit in question.
