ARML 2010 Information - Arizona, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming

Mailing List - Practices - Permission Slip

Students planning to go to ARML this year need to send a notarized permission slip, along with a check for $200 (made out to Math League), to PO Box 111, Sparta WI 54656. You may also pay online by clicking the button below; either way, make sure participant's name is attached to the payment, and make sure to mail the permission slip as soon as possible. Students whose payment is received by April 24 will be guaranteed a spot on the team, after which positions will be filled on a rolling basis until the team is full or ARML's internal deadline passes, whichever is earlier.

ARML Team:

Update - April 16

[If you did not receive the information below in an email, you are not properly signed up on our mailing list; you can do so by clicking the mailing list link above.]

For those of you who have applied to be on this year's ARML team, I am happy to announce that we are again able to accept everyone who applied onto the team. You'll need to make sure your payment and permission slip are in by April 24 in order to guarantee your place on the team and avoid late charges. We will begin making transportation arrangements soon once we know for certain who is going to ARML. Meanwhile, please encourage any talented classmates of yours to apply as well!

If you're interested in going and haven't filled out the application yet, you need to do so soon. The deadline was posted as April 10, but we can hold that open for a few more days if you're interested. If you went to ARML last year but aren't planning to go this year, please let us know so we don't start flooding your inbox with questions about why you haven't applied yet.. :)

If you're a teacher on this list, please encourage any of your students who may be interested to apply for the team. We are of course also interested in finding out which teachers are planning to accompany the team to Las Vegas this year, so be sure to fill out the application as well if you fall into this category. The application is available online at http://mathleague.org/armlapp.php

We are planning to add students from Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, South Dakota and North Dakota this year to our group that has included Nevada, Arizona and New Mexico in the past. In order to promote regional cohesion we'll be returning to a scheme this year where students are grouped into teams geographically, so at this point we anticipate that a tryout test on the 24th will be unnecessary. Right now it looks like we'll have two or three teams depending on how many people end up committing to the trip. If we have two teams, we'll probably split the region somewhere around Las Vegas. If our recruitment yield is similar to last year though, we should be able to field three teams, in which case we'll probably have one from Arizona, one from Nevada/New Mexico, and one from ID/MT/WY/SD/ND. If that is the case, we'll need to come up with a name for that region to identify the team - something like Big Sky or Badlands or Big Bad Skylands or something like that. :) Be thinking about possible names and we'll have a discussion about that in May..

For those of you in the northern states, please use the Nevada portal for our website to access information and sign up on the Nevada team; we'll sort out the actual teams later. Apologies that we don't have a separate link for your states up yet, but we made the decision to expand into your area late enough in the game this year that there wasn't time to get the extra links up..

May practices will be scheduled soon in areas where we have a critical mass to hold practices. If you don't live near a practice site, we will try to find a way to get you prepared electronically - sending out practice material and possibly holding some online training sessions. For those of you in the northern states, if we can find a place to hold a practice where at least 6 students can make it, Tim will arrange to fly in for a practice sometime in May..

Letter to Prospective Students

mathleague.org is recruiting a team of talented math students to represent the Desert Southwest (Arizona, Nevada, and New Mexico) at the national ARML competition, and we would like to invite you to submit an application to be on this year's team. We will be competing at the American Regions Mathematics League national contest in Las Vegas this June. This year's ARML meet is scheduled for June 4 and 5 at the campus of the University of Nevada - Las Vegas. We will leave on June 4 and return once the awards ceremony is completed around 4:00 Saturday afternoon June 5.

The total cost of the trip this year will be $200, which covers registration, housing Friday night at the University of Nevada - Las Vegas, and a team T-shirt. The $200 cost includes a $50 transportation surcharge that will be allocated to whomever gets you to the contest site; typically parents and teachers drive students to the contest, so if your own parent drives you $50 of this fee will be refunded to you. You will be responsible for your meals, as well as any additional spending money you wish to bring. Many school districts pay part or all of a student's expenses to attend the ARML meet. Feel free to seek funding from your local district; if you are accepted onto the team mathleague.org can prepare an official invitation letter to assist in securing funding if you would like to pursue this option.

Your application for participation will be due by April 10. You may apply online at http://mathleague.org/armlapp.php. Accepted students will be notified by April 15 and will need to submit a permission slip and the $200 fee by April 24. If your parents are interested in transporting you or other students to the test site in Las Vegas, have them fill out an application form as well so we can work out the appropriate details with them. Specific transportation details will be arranged once we have an idea of who will be attending.

We are expecting to field two or more full 15-member teams from the Desert Southwest this year, and based on our performance in the past it is likely one of our teams will be competitive for national recognition at ARML this year. As such, we will be implementing a competitive tryout on the morning of April 24 to place members on our teams. You will receive more information about the location and exact time of the tryout after we receive your application. If you are unable to test on April 24, please contact us so we can determine whether an alternate arrangement is possible.

For more information about the ARML program, feel free to check out the ARML webpage at http://www.arml.com. Once you have been accepted onto the team we will send details about transportation and notify you of any team practices to be held in your area between now and the competition. Attending practices is an important part of the ARML process; and as such you will be expected to attend practices held in May if you live close enough to attend practices. If you have any questions, we can be reached at 877-872-5244, or by email at mathleague@mathleague.org. Congratulations on your mathematical achievements this year; we look forward to your participation on this year's team!
