Students have been told the exact form their answers must take and that they must simplify their answers, so if they answer in a different form you must mark it wrong. In other words, if the answer is 1/2, do not accept .5 or 2/4. It is the student's job to do the math; if you are put in a position of having to decide whether .5 or 2/4 is the same as 1/2 (even if you know the answer!), that means the student did not do the math fully and correctly, and the question is incorrect.
If the correct answer includes information in parentheses, that content is optional. In other words, if the answer is "($) 3", you should accept "3" or "$3". If the student includes units, ignore that information and grade only the numerical answer.
