Dear Math Student:

Based on your performance on various math activities this year, I would like to extend this invitation for you to apply for a position on one of the Missouri or Kansas ARML teams this year.  We will be competing at the American Regions Mathematics League national contest in Iowa City this June. This year’s ARML meet is scheduled for June 2 at the campus of the University of Iowa. We will leave on May 31 and return once the awards ceremony is completed around 4:00 Saturday afternoon.  Each year we travel to Iowa on Thursday to allow us to spend time practicing as a complete team on Friday. If you had planned to take the SAT in June, you need to know that it is possible to reschedule that test so you can still go to ARML; if this issue affects you, please give me a call right away so I can help you arrange to take the SAT the week you return from ARML.

Due to an increase in fees imposed by the national organization, the total cost of the trip this year will be $150, which covers registration, housing Thursday and Friday night at the University of Iowa, two meals on Saturday, round trip transportation from St. Louis or Kansas City to Iowa City, and a team T-shirt.  You will be responsible for your meals on Friday and dinner Thursday and Saturday nights, as well as any additional spending money you wish to bring. Many school districts pay part or all of a student’s expenses to attend the ARML meet. Feel free to show this letter to your math coach; he or she may be able to help you get funding from your district.

Considering the early May registration deadline, I need to know for sure by 1 May who is interested in attending this year’s ARML meet. Please fill out the enclosed application and permission slip (available on the web at http://mathleague.org/arml/app.htm and http://mathleague.org/arml/permission.htm, respectively) and send an application deposit of $50, payable to Great Plains Math League. If your response is postmarked after 1 May, you must add a $15 nonrefundable late fee to your application deposit.  Once you are accepted onto this year’s team, we will notify you and ask you to bring the balance of $100 to the mini-ARML contest on May 12 (see below).  If for some reason we are unable to fit you onto one of our teams this year, your check will be returned uncashed.

If your parents are interested in traveling to Iowa City with the team, let me know so I can work out the appropriate details with them. Parents who accompany the team may be asked to help drive students to and from Iowa City, and will of course be reimbursed for gas costs. Specific transportation details will be worked out once I have an idea of how many parents will be able to drive as well as the geographic distribution of this year’s teams.

For more information about the ARML program, feel free to check out the ARML webpage at http://www.arml.com. Once you have been accepted onto the team I will send details about transportation and notify you of any team practices to be held in your area between now and the time we leave for Iowa.  Attending practices is an important part of the ARML process; and as such you will be expected to attend the mini-ARML contest held in conjunction with the GPML regional championship May 11-12, as well as several other practices held throughout May.  If you have any questions, I can be reached at 816-210-3147 or 800-720-0717, or by email at tim@mathlegue.org.  I look forward to your participation on this year’s team!

Sincerely,
